Martha Street

Martha Street presented designButton with the challenge to renovate and retrofit a gorgeous old colonial house and extend the home to accommodate the owner’s needs.

To improve the energy efficiency of the house, we insulated the frame walls with R2.5 bulk insulation which was clad with Hardie’s plank weatherboard. Opting for lightweight construction, the owners selected a recycled jarrah floor. Attention to design detail resulted in the additions being uniform with the existing home style and features.

The client required a studio/office space to run her business. We extended the garage and installed a set of glazed French doors to provide beautiful light and warmth in the winter months and a lovely view of the rear garden. Part of the garage was turned into valuable storage space for the owners to store camping gear and other items.

The major extension involved designing a new living area opening into a magnificent garden. Indoor/outdoor living has been achieved with a deck extending from the dining and living areas, making full use of the block. The owners have added an extensive photovoltaic solar system on the roof, offsetting their energy use extensively.

In all, the addition at Martha Street has proven cost-effective. It has provided freedom for the family to travel and live their lives without an expensive mortgage compromising their lifestyle. They created a perfect home that is comfortable but without negotiating their quality of life.
